The Turku subregion
The Turku subregion consists of eleven municipalities. In addition to the central city of Turku, the municipalities of Kaarina, Lieto, Masku, Mynämäki, Naantali, Nousiainen, Paimio, Raisio, Rusko and Sauvo all belong to the subregion. There are five institutes of higher education, and over 340 000 inhabitants, of whom 40 000 are students.
The central city of Turku is taking huge leaps towards becoming completely carbon neutral by the year 2029. The international Science Park area, the hub of manufacturing and maritime industry Blue Industry Park, the experience and events hub being planned in Turku’s old trainyard, and the new vision for the Turku City Centre all increase the speed at which Turku is achieving its new future. The Green Industry Park, which will be formed in the Naantali refinery area, has all of the prerequisites to become a new hub of bio- and circular economy.
