It sounded unbelievable. A massive pearl-shaped art installation the size of a three-storey building, containing stairs leading to the upper deck and illuminated by changing LED elements inside. When Sami Nurmela, CEO of Paattimaakarit Oy, was asked whether the company wanted to create the interior structure for “The Pearl,” the centerpiece of a major cruise ship, his answer was simple: “Of course.”
At the end of the last century, Paattimaakarit was a small two-person boat repair company. The company then began offering custom carpentry to large cruise ships. It started with wooden railings and teak decks before expanding into made-to-measure furniture and eventually complete restaurant and pool area interiors. Today, the company employs 50 people, operates production facilities in Raisio and Naantali, and has annual revenue of approximately €15 million. For the cruise ship Legend of the Seas, it furnished three restaurants and the sun deck for suite guests.
Bigger, bolder
If you want to work in shipbuilding, you need to adopt the mindset that nothing is too big or too difficult. Royal Caribbean is very inventive in creating the next wow effect for cruise passengers. There is no point in thinking, in the traditional Finnish way, that we cannot do it. You have to believe in yourself. There is always a solution.
