Project in a nutshell: The project in the Turku region aims to boost the hydrogen economy in alignment with EU and Finnish strategies, enhancing energy security and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. It will establish a collaborative business ecosystem, share knowledge, and solve growth issues to make Turku an attractive investment destination. The initiative seeks to transform the local energy sector, push towards carbon neutrality, and leverage digital solutions for sector integration. It also fosters university-industry collaboration to develop and pilot hydrogen technologies, aiming to elevate Turku’s profile in the global hydrogen market.
Description: The project addresses the global climate challenge by accelerating the development of the hydrogen business in the Turku region. The active development of the hydrogen economy is directly in line with the EU’s and Finland’s hydrogen strategy and reduces geopolitical dependencies related to fossil raw materials. Additionally, the hydrogen economy enhances energy security and increases the value-add of renewable energy produced in Finland.
The project will build an industrial hydrogen business ecosystem in the Turku region by leading the hydrogen sector network, growing it into an active and cross-sectoral business ecosystem. The network will share up-to-date information, solve growth-related challenges for companies and stakeholders, and develop the region as an attractive investment environment. The project will accelerate the transformation of the Turku region’s energy sector and aim for impactful measures to achieve Turku’s and Finland’s carbon neutrality goals through sector integration and the hydrogen economy. Sector integration requires digital interfaces, which is why the project will increase companies’ understanding of digital solutions suitable for the hydrogen economy. Finland has significant market potential in digital solutions for the hydrogen economy.
To strengthen the competitiveness of the region and Finland, the project promotes collaboration between companies and universities to develop hydrogen business based on the region’s strengths and aims to initiate internationally significant pilot operations of the hydrogen economy in the region. As a result, the profile of the Turku region’s hydrogen ecosystem and its strong research-based expertise will become nationally and internationally recognized.
Duties of Business Turku Oy Ltd.:
- Support the development of an industrial hydrogen business ecosystem in the Turku region.
- Address the challenge posed by companies regarding infrastructure and the availability of industrial plots.
- Support the transformation of the Turku region’s energy system through sector integration and the hydrogen economy.
- Increase companies’ understanding of digital business opportunities related to the hydrogen economy.
- Promote collaboration between businesses and research.
- Advance national and international cooperation on hydrogen themes.
