The theme of Taxonomy Thursday is the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for non-listed SMEs (VSME), published at the end of 2024. This voluntary standard is designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop, manage, and report their sustainability efforts.

Using the standard can enhance SMEs’ competitive growth opportunities and provide valuable information to investors, lenders, and partners about the company’s sustainability actions. The VSME standard is aligned with the ESRS standard intended for large companies and addresses the same sustainability themes.

However, the VSME standard is tailored to the unique characteristics of small and medium-sized enterprises. The European Commission officially endorsed the use of the VSME framework for SMEs in July 2025. During Taxonomy Thursday, we will explore what VSME means and how companies can leverage it to develop their business and improve competitiveness.

The European Union’s sustainable finance classification system, known as the taxonomy, defines criteria for environmentally sustainable business activities. It will guide the actions of financiers and impose reporting obligations on large publicly listed companies. The taxonomy will also impact smaller businesses, as investments are likely to increasingly favor projects and procurements that meet taxonomy criteria.

A key principle of the taxonomy is “Do no significant harm,” which means that one environmental objective cannot be promoted at the expense of others. Implementing this principle requires analytical work and a systematic approach to ESG matters.

To succeed sustainably in the future, companies must be aware of the taxonomy framework and understand how it affects their own operating environment. The webinar series will cover the taxonomy as a whole and how it should be considered in business operations.

Business Turku is organising the Taxonomy Thursday webinar series as part of its Green Transition activities. The webinar will be recorded, and materials will be sent to registered participants after the event.
