The Taxonomy Thursday webinar series, facilitated by Business Turku, offers practical perspectives on the impact of the EU taxonomy on different industries. February’s Taxonomy Thursday will feature perspectives on the European Commission’s proposal for legislation on producer responsibility for textiles.

The European Commission has made a proposal for legislation on textile producer responsibility. Producer responsibility is a key policy instrument that will accelerate the circular economy of textiles and guide companies towards more sustainable operating models. Its basic idea is that manufacturers and importers of products are responsible for the environmental impacts of their products throughout their entire life cycle – including when textiles are no longer in use. This would be a major change to the current situation, where consumers and waste management companies are responsible for recycling textiles.

Possible new legislation will bring new business opportunities for companies in the circular economy. The challenge is to create a cooperation model for textile companies and create new practices. The system is currently being built in Finland and companies are considering how they can operate in the new situation. In this Taxonomy webinar, we will hear perspectives on the topic and discuss how companies can prepare for a possible change.
